AC Maintenance Checklist: Keep Your System Running Like New

When temperatures start climbing in Los Angeles, the last thing any homeowner wants is an air conditioner that can’t keep up. The truth is, many common AC issues can be prevented with a few simple maintenance steps, yet they’re often overlooked until something goes wrong.

At Joshua Young Air Conditioning, we’ve been helping homeowners stay cool since 2016, and we’ve seen firsthand how a little preventative care can save you from costly repairs and uncomfortable days.

Here’s a simple, homeowner-friendly checklist to keep your system running efficiently all season long.

Simple AC Maintenance Checklist

1. Remove Any Winter Covering - If you covered your outdoor unit during the winter, don’t forget to remove the tarp or cover before turning your system on. Running your AC while it’s covered can restrict airflow and damage the unit.

2. Clear Debris Around the Outdoor Unit - Leaves, dirt, and other debris can build up around your condenser. Make sure there’s at least 2–3 feet of clear space around the unit so it can breathe properly.

3. Safely Clean the Condenser Coils - Before cleaning:

  • Turn off your AC at the thermostat

  • Shut off power at the breaker

Then, use a garden hose to gently rinse off the condenser coils and remove dirt buildup. This helps your system run more efficiently.

4. Replace Thermostat Batteries (If Applicable) - Low batteries can cause your thermostat to malfunction or lose connection with your system. Swap them out to avoid unnecessary issues.

5. Change Your Air Filter - This is one of the most important (and most forgotten) steps. A dirty filter restricts airflow, reduces efficiency, and can even lead to system breakdowns. Check it monthly and replace as needed.

6. Make Sure the Return Vent Isn’t Blocked - Your system needs proper airflow to function correctly. Ensure furniture, rugs, or curtains aren’t blocking your return air vent.

7. Check That All Supply Vents Are Open - Closing vents might seem like a way to save energy, but it can actually strain your system. Keep vents open and unobstructed for balanced airflow throughout your home.

⚠️ Why This Matters

These are all simple tasks most homeowners can handle, but they’re often forgotten until the AC stops working on the hottest day of the year. Regular maintenance not only improves performance but also extends the life of your system and helps keep energy bills under control.

When to Call the Professionals

While these steps go a long way, a professional inspection ensures everything inside your system is running safely and efficiently, from refrigerant levels to electrical components.
